<ul><li>It increases your memory (of what you've written) and focus incredibly! </li><li>Understand information better and recall it quicker than others.</li><li>At the end, it boosts your creativity, and, you discover your own style of note-making.</li><li>You can re-write the notes from your laptop and become more efficient at remembering what you've learnt!</li></ul>

The Benefits

<ul><li>It uses two columns. The first column is the "cue" (what is it that you are actually learning?)</li><li>The second column is the "note" (note down points that you want to remember)</li><li>The bottom includes a summary where you write down the brief summary of what you have learned. It could be lengthy or short depending on what you learned.</li><li>I suggest that you make your own Cornell notes and modify it to make it your own! <a href="https://templatearchive.com/cornell-notes/">here are the templates</a></li></ul>

The Cornell Method

<ul><li>You note down important points (in your own words! Don't just copy-paste) in the boxes.</li><li>Divide the boxes depending on the length and content of the topic.</li><li>Use highlighters for important phrases and topics, or mark them as such.</li><li>You could create sub-boxes for lengthy/important topics.</li><li>Works well if you have a tablet because you can resize and make other changes easily. It's visually pleasing as well!</li><li>Don't forget to revise after every topic/chapter.</li></ul>

The Boxing Method

<ul><li>Use this if you want to connect different concepts, keywords, or topics. </li><li>Mostly used for theoretical subjects.</li><li>Since it's messy, it could be difficult to find something you are looking for.</li><li>The best way to use it would be to combine it with Boxing Method or Cornell Method.</li><li>For example, the left-column could be used to define what you're learning. </li></ul>

Map Note-Making Method

There are other note-making methods. You can read the original article, or, find new, better ones. However, note-making will not be productive if you don't revise what you've learned. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

People usually learn things because they need to. They are either frustrated by something in themselves or the world. Maybe they're not making enough money to support their family, or a loved one is sick.  In these cases, they're entering a survival mode where they're urged to action. While survival mode learning can be effective, it is not sustainable or enjoyable in the long run.

Why people learn things

If we want an educated citizenry that enjoys learning and knows how to take advantage of all the available information on the internet, we need to inspire people. Education and learning theorists propose that students learn best when it is associated with strong positive emotions. But stress, boredom, confusion, low motivation and anxiety can interfere with learning. Schools have become stress incubators and condition students to associate learning with unpleasantness. Schools value rote memorization over people's ability to take action and to learn for the sake of knowing.

People are capable of extraordinary feats of learning

We can move to a system of inspiration by inverting the learning process. Instead of starting with the building blocks and moving towards curiosity, students should be guided by curiosity and then move toward the building blocks.  The benefits of memorization will become self-evident, and the motivation to learn can become intrinsic. However, the sad truth is that this way of learning is not scalable for an in-person curriculum where students must do the same thing at the same time.

Learning for the sake of learning

Schools should embrace entertainment because it lets you scale inspiration.  Entertainment is not amusement. Entertainment means engaging a person's attention in a way that makes the time pass pleasantly. The ancient Greeks knew this intuitively and wrapped their most important ideas in narratives instead of just giving dry facts. For example, plays like The Iliad and The Odyssey weren't just a form of entertainment. They provided cultural instruction too.

How to produce inspired learners

In our modern world, the masters of storytelling come from Hollywood and YouTube. These creators use many of the same tools the Greeks discovered.  But now it costs nearly nothing to spread great entertainment and education to the world.

How to 10x Your Learning Skills

Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, and Marie Curie had brilliant ideas that pushed the boundaries of their time. However, genius is not a fixed quantity. Anyone can be a genius in the right context and with the right tools. Research suggests there are ways we can all become more intelligent and think like a genius, from being able to process information faster than most people to be able to tackle complex problems efficiently.

Genius isn't solely inborn

Great thinkers from da Vinci to Thomas Edison were more interested in how things could work. Brilliant thinkers like Marie Curie and Steve Jobs are renowned for their original thinking that led to groundbreaking discoveries. They knew how to think but weren't born with these advantages. Instead, they learned specific methods to understand the world around them and unlock hidden potential.

Great thinkers approach problems differently

R<a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321729749_Robust_Prediction_of_Individual_Creative_Ability_from_Brain_Functional_Connectivity">ecent research</a> about creatives found that people who are more creative can simultaneously engage brain networks that don't typically work together. Great minds discover novel ideas because they focus on how to think, not what to think.

Geniuses know how to connect unrelated ideas

The ability to think and act outside your normal understanding realm requires you to see things from different perspectives and imagine unique solutions. <ul><li>Newton spent many years teaching himself mathematics before developing the concept of gravity.</li><li>Picasso was not born to paint. He honed his skill.</li><li>Mozart committed almost all his life to learning and composing music.</li></ul> Geniuses are mostly self-learners. The best way is to start with books.

Genius is a learnable skill

Genius minds see things abstractly. They tend to see the big picture more clearly than most people. Original ideas require you not to be afraid to try new things and take risks. Look for inspiration in things people take for granted.

Original ideas seem irrational

The human capacity to learn, discover, improve, create or change our environment is very natural. We are made to create. Creativity is not something you have or you don't. Watch how children think freely until they are formally educated to become conventional thinkers. We are expected to join closed-minded educational systems, stop thinking and do what we are told. Yet that is what prevents the development of independent and original thinking.

The Path to Genius: Think “How,” Instead of “What”

<ul><li>Incidental learning is learning that happens unintentionally from activities. For example, when someone plays a sport for fun but ends up improving their skills over time.</li><li>Intentional learning happens due to activities where learning is a deliberate and primary goal.</li></ul> Neither type of learning is inherently better. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages and may be useful for different people under different circumstances.

Incidental learning vs intentional learning

<ul><li>Instead of using flashcards, someone learns new vocabulary words by watching TV in a foreign language for fun.</li><li>A toddler who touches something hot out of curiosity learns that it hurts to do so.</li><li>A kid who plays with other kids for fun learns social skills incidentally.</li><li>A teacher who interacts with students as part of the job learns how to communicate more effectively.</li><li>An athlete who watches competitions in their sport for fun learns how to perform new moves.</li><li>An entrepreneur who reads a fiction book to relax learns new ways to improve their business.</li></ul>

Examples of incidental learning

The defining characteristic of incidental learning is the lack of intention to learn. Ways incidental learning can vary. Incidental learning depends on:<ul><li>Whether learners are motivated to learn.</li><li>Whether learners are aware of the learning.</li><li>Whether other people such as parents or teachers are aware of the learning.</li><li>Whether other people are guiding the learning by providing encouragement or asking questions.</li></ul>

Characteristics of incidental learning

Benefits of incidental learning:<ul><li>It can be more effective, for example, if someone avoids intentional learning because they lack confidence in their ability to learn.</li><li>It can be more efficient. For example, someone could learn something quickly and automatically through their daily routine instead of intentionally spending time and effort learning it.</li><li>It can be more enjoyable. For example, playing Scrabble is more enjoyable for learning to spell than memorising lists.</li></ul> There are also situations where incidental learning is ineffective, such as learning specific concepts for an exam.

Benefits and drawbacks of incidental learning

You can use incidental learning by placing yourself in situations where you can learn without actively trying to learn. For example, if you want to learn a new language but a course bores you, engage in activities such as video games and watching TV shows without actively trying to learn.

How to learn incidentally

<ul><li>Teach people directly. If someone can learn something but don't try to do so intentionally, simply teach them what they need to know.</li><li>Help people engage in incidental learning. Ask guided questions to help someone in a situation to think through what's happening.</li><li>Drive people to situations where they can engage in incidental learning. If you want to help someone grow their vocabulary, encourage them to read or read intention-grabbing books to them.</li><li>Prompt people to engage in incidental learning. Explain to someone what incidental learning is, why it’s beneficial, and how they can engage in it.</li></ul>

How to promote incidental learning in others

<ul><li>Reverse psychology involves getting people to do things by prompting them to do the opposite. For example, if someone is misinformed about something and won't listen to you, encourage them to find evidence that will prove you wrong.</li><li>Protégé effect, where teaching, pretending to teach or preparing to teach information to others helps a person learn that information. Encourage a disinterested student to tutor other students.</li><li>Combine incidental learning with intentional learning. For example, teaching key concepts after the learner learned something incidentally.</li></ul>

Techniques to promote incidental learning

Incidental teaching involves teaching individuals in situations they're not trying to learn, such as a parent reading a historical novel to their child. This form of teaching can be used in various situations, for example, as a naturalistic language intervention through adult-child interactions, such as play. Incidental learning is also used to help autistic people improve their social skills.

“Money is not going to solve all of your problems, but it’s going to solve all of your money problems.”“Money is how we transfer wealth. Money is social credits. It is the ability to have credits and debits of other people’s time.”“Money buys you freedom in the material world. It’s not going to make you happy, it’s not going to solve your health problems, it’s not going to make your family great, it’s not going to make you fit, it’s not going to make you calm. But it will solve a lot of external problems.”“Making money is not a thing you do—it’s a skill you learn.”

Money vs Wealth

“If you secretly despise wealth, it will elude you.”“Money is not the root of all evil; there’s nothing evil about it. But the lust for money is bad.”“Lusting for money is bad for us because it is a bottomless pit. It will always occupy your mind. If you love money, and you make it, there’s never enough. There is never enough because the desire is turned on and doesn’t turn off at some number.”“You make money to solve your money and material problems. I think the best way to stay away from this constant love of money is to not upgrade your lifestyle as you make money.”

Despising Wealth

I’ve learned a few things, and some principles. I try to lay them out in a timeless manner, where you can figure it out for yourself. Because at the end of the day, I can’t quite teach anything. I can only inspire you and maybe give you a few hooks so you can remember.

“You don’t get rich by spending your time to save money. You get rich by saving your time to make money.““Everybody who really makes money at some point owns a piece of a product, a business, or some IP.”“Usually, the real wealth is created by starting your own companies or even by investing.”“Without ownership, your inputs are very closely tied to your outputs.”“Getting rich is about knowing what to do, who to do it with, and when to do it. It is much more about understanding than purely hard work. Yes, hard work matters, and you can’t skimp on it. But it has to be directed in the right way.”

“I’m always ‘working.’ It looks like work to others, but it feels like play to me. And that’s how I know no one can compete with me on it.”“My motivation has shifted from being goal-oriented to being artistic.”“Creating businesses and making money are now more of an ‘art.’““Whether in commerce, science, or politics—history remembers the artists.”“I’m just playing, for sixteen hours a day. If others want to compete with me, they’re going to work, they’re going to lose because they’re not going to do it for sixteen hours a day, seven days a week.”“I got to combine my vocation and my avocation.”

“Retirement is when you stop sacrificing today for an imaginary tomorrow. When today is complete, in and of itself, you’re retired.”“Once you can solve your money problems, either by lowering your lifestyle or by making enough money, you want to retire.”There are multiple ways to retire:<ul><li>“One way is to have so much money saved that your passive income (without you lifting a finger) covers your burn rate.”</li><li>“A second is you just drive your burn rate down to zero—you become a monk.”</li><li>“A third is you’re doing something you love. You enjoy it so much, it’s not about the money.”</li></ul>

“Whenever you can in life, optimize for independence rather than pay. If you have independence and you’re accountable on your output, as opposed to your input—that’s the dream.”“My old definition was ‘freedom to.’ Freedom to do anything I want. Freedom to do whatever I feel like, whenever I feel like. Now, the freedom I’m looking for is internal freedom. It’s ‘freedom from.’ Freedom from reaction. Freedom from feeling angry. Freedom from being sad. Freedom from being forced to do things. I’m looking for ‘freedom from,’ internally and externally, whereas before I was looking for ‘freedom to.’“

The Almanack of Naval Ravikant

The modern schooling system is known to prevent people from acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today's world. Before children start school, they learn at a mind-blowing speed. They learn how to walk, run, jump and climb. They become fluent in one or more languages and use those languages to assert their will, argue, ask questions, be funny, make friends, and make sense of their world. They manage to do all this without any curriculum, tests, grades, or schooling structure. However, when we introduce a school structure, children's learning decrease dramatically.

Children learn naturally (without schooling)

Children are instinctively predisposed to educate themselves. Watch any child left alone with an iPhone, and you can see the drive to self-education. Learning drives are:<ul><li>Curiosity drives the child to know what the apparatus is, how it works, and what they can do with it.</li><li>Playfulness causes the child to examine the apparatus. They pass it from hand to hand, turn it over, rub it, shake it, drop it, throw it. They are running little experiments to test the apparatus' properties and capabilities.</li><li>Sociability drives the child to talk to people about this fascinating apparatus.</li></ul>

The educative instinct

Hundreds of studies conducted with children show that they gaze longer at new scenes than familiar ones. They look longer at events that they find intriguing and lose interest as soon as there is nothing new to learn from it. Children are relentlessly drawn toward anything that runs counter to expectations.

Curiosity: The drive to explore and understand

After the curiosity drive leads a child to a new toy or situation, playfulness takes over. Without that curiosity, we wouldn't try out anything new. Without playfulness, we wouldn't become skilful at anything. Research found that the shift from exploration to play is one from a focused serious expression to a more relaxed, smiling one. This understanding of play's biological purpose explains why young animals play more than older animals.

Playfulness: The drive to practice and create

Education is cultural transmission. That is how each new generation acquires and builds upon the skills, knowledge, lore, and values. Without sociability, there's no education. Without sociability, you eliminate the two most important forms of learning:<ol><li>Observation. In most societies, children first learn culturally relevant skills by watching and mimicking their elders.</li><li>Age mixing. Teaching and learning go both ways. Interaction with younger children teaches older ones new skills they wouldn't know otherwise.</li></ol>

Sociability: The drive to share information and ideas

It is nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wreck and ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted by means of coercion and a sense of duty.

Schools teach children that learning is work. Children are told to "do what you are told." School is not an environment that promotes exploration and discovery but is set for indoctrination. Instead of following their curiosity, students learn to jump through hoops and check off boxes. Worst, children learn to ignore their innate curiosity.

The limitations of school:<ul><li>Children are confined to a largely unchanging environment.</li><li>They are not free to pursue their interests in self-directed ways.</li><li>Children are continuously evaluated so that instead of exploring, discovering, and failing, they learn to be concerned with evaluation and pleasing the teacher.</li></ul> Researchers repeatedly observed that children ask questions about rules and requirements, not the subject itself. The teachers ask questions, and the students guess the answers. When children show interest, the teacher often cuts them off, so they don't fall behind.

School teaches selfishness, not sociability.When students are evaluated for their learning and compared to other students, they learn to only look out for themselves. If you have the drive to share information and ideas, you're not allowed to bring them into school. Sharing information and ideas is known as "cheating."

Sudbury Valley is a private day school founded by Daniel Greenberg located in a semi-rural part of Massachusetts. He wondered why there couldn't be an educational system that helps students develop passionate interests and then pursue those interests. So Greenberg founded such a school. The basic premise of the school’s educational philosophy is that each person is responsible for his or her own education.

<ul><li>Children educate themselves.</li><li>The school establishes no curriculum, gives no tests, and does not rank or evaluate students.</li><li>The school is a democratic community. Students and staff members operate on a one-person-per-vote basis, regardless of age.</li><li>Students are free all day to move about as they please.</li><li>The students are not assigned to grades or groups.</li><li>The school has a non-evaluation policy. Students wishing to get a school diploma must prepare and defend a thesis explaining why they are ready to graduate and how they have prepared themselves for responsible adult life.</li></ul>

At home, children are not bogged down by a curriculum, do not require particular assignments for the purpose of education, and do not test their children to measure progress. Instead, they allow their children the freedom to pursue their own interests and to learn in their own ways.

To be a great reader, it is not enough that you read, it’s also how you read. The following strategies by no means are a complete list, but if you implement even a couple of them,  you’ll not only be a better reader but a better person too.

Reading Right

If you find yourself wanting to speed up the reading process on a particular book, you might want to ask yourself: “Is this book any good?”You turn off a TV show or movie if it’s boring. You stop eating food that doesn’t taste good. You unfollow people when you realize their content is useless.Life is too short to read books you don’t enjoy reading. The thumb rule: 100 pages minus your age — so if you’re 30 years old and a book hasn’t captivated you by page 70, stop reading it.That way, as you age, you have to endure crappy books less and less.

Stop Reading Books You Aren’t Enjoying
