Finally, when you have limited universities on your hand to chose from, you can go around interacting with students and alumni. This can be done both online and offline. Online you can use platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, StudentRoom, etc. and join online groups to connect with them. Many university websites also have options to interact with current students which you can use to your benefit. Finally, offline you can visit the university’s international office and connect with the alumni or the country representative to know more and get personalized advice.

Have a leader to follow.Try to:<ul><li>Put your finger down the line and move your finger over the page or screen, never touch it.</li><li>Move all the arm, not only your finger.</li></ul>

Have the correct posture and breath.Try to:Read while sitting straight to increase your focus.Take some deep breaths before reading to relax your vision.

Learning from a modern-day polymath

To be elite, you have to express who you are through your art. You will work best when your relationship to your pursuit remains in harmony with your disposition. There will be times when you need to try new ideas and take in further information, but it’s essential to integrate this information in a way that does not violate who you are. When you feel obstructed, you’re trying to fit into a mould that doesn’t suit you.

Unobstructed self-expression

Most people want to avoid pain and discomfort, which makes them mediocre. However, you will have pain when you live at your stretch point. It can be physical or mental resistance.  When you aim for mastery, you must learn to embrace the pain and engage fully. Craving the pain and discomfort will help you to grow and excel. Setbacks will give you the resilience to succeed.

Embracing pain and failure

When you learn a technique, you’re learning one thing, when you’re learning a principle that embodies a technique, you might be learning a thousand things.

Lateral thinking - the ability to take a lesson from one thing and apply it to something else is the most important discipline anyone can cultivate. The goal in learning is unobstructed self-expression. The person teaching you is the person who knows you best, and that is you 20 years from now. So it’s helpful to visualise that person to understand your false constructs.

Thematic learning (lateral thinking)

When you are learning new skills, most people go wide before going deep. However, it is better to prioritise depth before breadth. Delve into the details to understand what makes the macro work. Learning too wide is distracting, while focusing on depth helps you develop a feel for quality. If you have a few skills to learn, it's more effective to plunge deeply into one skill. That deep state of learning is necessary for the brain to remap effectively.

Depth always beats breadth

“[Quality] It’s such a beautiful, incredible principle. Most people think they can wait around for the big moments to turn it on. But if you don’t cultivate turning it on as a way of life in the little moments – and there are hundreds of more times little moments than big – then there’s no chance in the big moments.”

Quality is a process and an outcome. It's the process of learning to do or learn something exceptionally well. But it is the result that we enjoy. One should first master the fundamentals, which involves hours and hours of mindful practice:<ul><li>break the art or knowledge down into their respective components, </li><li>repeating each component until it's internalised, </li><li>then linking the components, </li><li>making adjustments, </li><li>and finally increasing the speed. </li></ul>

The principles of quality

There are four stages of learning<ol><li>Unconscious incompetence - “I don’t know how bad I am”</li><li>Conscious incompetence - “I am very bad at this.” (Most people stop here because they don’t put in the effort to go deeply enough.)</li><li>Conscious competence - “ I can do this if I focus.”</li><li>Unconscious competence - “I don’t remember the last details of driving my car.”</li></ol>

Learning phases

Train to be at peace in chaos. Because we “don’t want to be meditating in a flower garden. We want to be able to meditate and have a meditative state throughout our lives – in a hurricane, in a thunderstorm, when sharks are attacking you – any moment.” Steps to learn how to be a resilient performer.<ol><li>Be at peace with imperfection.</li><li>In your performance training, learn to use that imperfection to your advantage.</li><li>Learn to create little bumps to spur you along so that you are always inspired.</li></ol>

Go towards stress, tension and weaknesses

Recovery periods are as important as pushing yourself. Those who create periods of inactivity between pushing themselves are the ones that perform the best. <ul><li>If you’re at work and running out of mental stamina, take a break and come back renewed. </li><li>When you are learning, it is vital to understand that there are periods of learning and reflecting. </li><li>Plateaus are the periods in our learning process where it feels like we’re not improving. However, you have to learn to be comfortable with pushing through these periods as there is a huge spike in improvement on the other side.</li></ul>

Josh Waitzkin was the international under-18 chess champion at age 18, only to quit chess at age 22 and pursue Tai-chi Push Hands, the martial application of Tai Chi. He became world champion in this martial art at age 28, and won the title several more times since then. As an accomplished competitor in two fields - one mental, one mostly physical - a book written by him about how he learns is obviously going to contain some interesting ideas. The main themes of what he writes about are two: learning by focusing on principles and deeply understanding the fundamentals; and how to increase concentration and overcome distraction. Interestingly, many of the things that Waitzkin writes in his own personal way square with a lot of findings of cognitive science, many of which we already talked about in other episodes of the podcast. Ideas such as the role of the subconscious, chunking, and expert blindness all appear in his writing, but he usually refers to these by other names. Two quotes from the book didn't make it into the recording, but are worth sharing, and so I will share them below. On losing: "There is something particularly painful about being beaten in a chess game. In the course of a battle, each player puts every ounce of his or her tactical, strategical, emotional, physical, and spiritual being into the struggle. It describes the process of focusing on the princess and not the pits, to stick with a task and learn more.
The focus is about beating the game, not about how dumb you might look. And as a direct result of that attitude—of learning from but not being focused on the failures—we got really good and we learned a ton in a really short amount of time.
When you frame a challenge or a learning process in this way, you actually want to do it. It feels natural to ignore the failures and try again.

The Super Mario Effect

When 50,000 of Mark Rober's 3 million YouTube subscribers participated in a basic coding challenge, the data all pointed to what Rober has dubbed the Super Mario Effect. The YouTube star and former NASA engineer describes how this data-backed mindset for life gamification has stuck with him along his journey, and how it impacts the ways he helps (or tricks) his viewers into learning science, engineering, and design. Mark Rober has made a career out of engineering, entertainment, and education. After completing degrees in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and the University of Southern California, Rober joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. In his nine years as a NASA engineer, seven of which were on the Mars rover Curiosity team, Rober worked on both the Descent Stage (the jet pack that lowered the Rover to the surface) and some hardware on the Rover top deck for collecting samples. In 2011, Rober’s iPad-based Halloween costume helped launch both his creative costume company, Digital Dudz, and his YouTube channel, which now boasts 3 million subscribers and 400 million views. His videos focus on creative ideas and science- and engineering-based pranks and activities. Rober is a regular guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". Today, he does research and development work for a large technology company in Northern California, where he lives with his wife and son. What is string theory?

<ul><li>The problem faced in newtonian physics(and by Newton himself) was that, although he could mathematically calculate gravitational pull, he was baffled by HOW this gravitational force was exerted through an inert medium like space on a celestial object so far apart.</li></ul>But it could be successfully, mathematically be applied to astonomy, except for the 'how'.

Now, coming to Einstein's era,he postulated that,<ul><li>space time has got 4 dimensions(including time), (like Newton did), but he also managed to explain the how, which Newton couldn't.</li></ul>According to Einstein, <ul><li>without any matter on the fabric of space time, it appears to be flat and linear</li><li> when matter is present, this space-time fabric warps and curves around that matter, alongwhich gravity attracts.(check pic)</li></ul>

Einstein's theory

<ul><li> Theodor Kaluza, theorized that electromagnetism(just like gravity) exerts its effects as warps and curves in a 5th dimension (including time).</li><li> Furthermore, using the assumption of the existence of a 5th dimension, he could also successfully mathematically derive out, not only einsteins equation, but also the equation for electromagnetism.</li></ul> That is it formed the basis of a unified theory, where every other physical theories could be derived from.

<ul><li>Oskar Klein, went a step ahead to postulate that there are relatively smaller dimensions which are curled up, located at a microscopic level of the larger dimensions. </li><li>just like how an electric cable from afar seems to be single dimension, but for small ants on the cable, there are much more dimensions(clockwise/anticlockwise) to that cable than a single dimension as perceived by the observor.</li></ul> <ul><li>That is according to Klein, ultramicroscopic enlargement of the visible dimensions could lead to the demonstration of, curled up microscopic dimensions.(check image)</li></ul>

Coming to the present era,<ul><li>Superstring theory - Talks about the smallest, indivisible entity which makes up space.</li><li>i.e. We know, matter is made of atoms, which is composed of a nucleus, a proton and an electron. We have even gone further and found that, these micro particles are made of packets of energy called quarks.</li></ul>

<ul><li>According to string theory, quarks are actually constituted of dancing, filament like form of energy, which looks like a vibrating string. </li><li>And these can vibrate in different patterns(frequencies), leading to production of different types of particles based on the vibrating frequency. </li></ul>This is the ultramicroscopic landscape of the universe. The matter within matter.

<ul><li>Mathematically speaking, a very fascinating result was obtained, while applying and trying to incorporate Newtons, Einstein's equations.</li><li>The string theory equation holds true mathematically in a scenario involving 10 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time(i.e. a 11 dimensional system), which has not yet being observed by man</li><li>The discovery and exploration of these extra dimensions could also hold the answer to why the 20(actually 26) <a href="https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.codata.org%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2FTable%25201-CODATA%2520Recommended%2520Values%2520of%2520Fundamental%2520Physical%2520Constants%25202014.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fcodata.org%2Fcodata-recommended-values-of-the-fundamental-physical-constants-2014%2F&tbnid=vz1jX8rjxOjTaM&vet=1&docid=OX1uvsqAeHzkPM&w=2156&h=1446&itg=1&hl=en-IN&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim">fundamental constants</a> have such distinct values which are relevant to the decimal.</li></ul>

String theory's mathematical implication

<ul><li>The geometrical shape of the ultramicroscopic landscape, is called as Calabi Yau manifold, and is postulated to be one which folds in on itself.(see pic) </li><li>The shape of the landscape is thought to be what determines how the filaments of energy vibrate. </li></ul>

<ul><li>Since, we have only observed the existence of 4 dimensions(including time), but have mathematically figured out the existence of 7 more dimensions, many experiments are being conducted to empirically observe them.</li><li>One such experiment, done in the large hadron collider, where, particles moving near the speed of light are allowed to collide head on, to see if any resulting debris (called as gravitan) enters into any of these unknown dimensions.(This is calculated by measuring the total energy before and after the collison, lesser energy after the collision implies energy has been lost somewhere).</li></ul>

Casual observation tells us that most people don’t use math beyond simple arithmetic in everyday life. Few people make use of fractions, trigonometry, or multi-digit division algorithms they use in school. More advanced tools like algebra or calculus are even less likely to be brought out to solve everyday problems.

Failure to Use Math In Everyday Life

<li>Below Basic – Add up two numbers to complete an ATM deposit.</li>
<li>Basic – Calculate the cost of a sandwich and salad using prices from a menu.</li>
<li>Intermediate – Calculate the total cost of ordering office supplies using a page from an office supplies catalogue and an order form.</li>
<li>Proficient – Calculate an employee’s share of health insurance costs for a year using a table that shows how the employee’s monthly cost varies with income and family size.</li>
</ul>

The Scale Of Quantitive Abilities

The first argument would allege a failure of education. People don’t use math because they were never taught it thoroughly enough to use it properly.A lack of automaticity may explain the difficulty people had with the quantitative questions in the survey. Their math wasn’t easily accessible, which led them to make mistakes in the reasoning tasks.

Why Do People Fail to Use Math: Most People Don’t Learn Math Well Enough to Use It

The second argument is a little different. It argues that people may develop competence in math classes, but they struggle to translate real-life problems into a format where they can use their mathematics knowledge.What people struggle with is not doing math, but recognizing where and how to apply math to real problems.

A third explanation is that math is overrated as a solution strategy for problems outside of exacting, quantitative disciplines. The person measuring cottage cheese managed to get the correct answer without multiplying fractions.Everyone values knowledge they have mastered and tends to dismiss knowledge they haven’t as irrelevant. There’s probably bias on both sides.

Math Isn’t That Useful for Everyday Problems

More drill and practice with math. More time spent drilling and practicing math makes it more available for effortless calculations. More practice with interpreting problem situations. Many students are only taught math as symbol manipulation. Less instruction is focused on identifying situations where it might be useful. Give real-life challenges that require math. Ultimately, skills and knowledge are sustained by usage. If you don’t have any genuine problems that require skill, you begin to forget them.
